LegalEdge Version 2 Details
Work on LegalEdge Version 1 has been frozen at 1.80. Version 2 is now being prepared for deployment. Version 2 will be a staged release starting with the upgrade of our database from MySQL v5.2 to PostGreSQL v9 (PG9), followed by the integration and release of Class Reports and a dramatic change to the look and feel of the UI.
DatabaseThe change to PG9 is necessary to improve our backend processing speed. As MySQL has no procedural language queries we have been running discrete SQL transactions inside Ruby. V2 will be entirely built with pre-compiled stored procedures or PSQL functions to increase the stability and speed of the processing.
Say hello to EricEric is our new server running Class Reports and online document generation. Eric joins our other server Max (nicknamed Clapton by us older rockers) and our as yet unnamed gateway server. V1 relied on Max serving document merge data to the client machine where it was assembled into a real document. This meant we were tied to using MS Word for windows as our word processor. Eric will be building documents on request and sending the finished document to the client while simultaneously saving a version of the document in documenta, the online document manager. Now we can truly interface with online word processors like Google docs, Zoho office or desktop processors like Open Office and - YES - Macintosh as well as good old MS Word.
Class ReportsClass Reports is an online reporting suite utilising Crystal Reports to render on-screen, or in pdf or html formats. Class Reports has been developed by Craig and David and is a great fit with LegalEdge. Class Reports can provide reports from any database and features periodic batched reports direct to your email, dashboards or ad hoc reports on demand. Complete drill down capability is available from the online customisable parameter input interface. Our V1 clients will be offered Class Reports at a special rate. Class Reports will be an optional extra for subscribers joining us on V2.
New UIV1 has a single view portal that loads in response to commands from the Left Hand menu. V2 will feature multiple "mini" windows much like a windows desktop. Users will be able to drag and drop between windows and open multiple matters simultaneously, or prepare a document while requisitioning a trust payment for example. The mini windows will be rolled out as the modules are completed. A number of functional changes will finally surface including Safe Custody and Library Assets management. Documenta and the uploading of documents/emails will be much smoother with direct VPN access no longer required. Productivity and Communication enhancements include "click to email", the Edge knowledge base and the Edge network to help you find staff or specialised counsel.
